Plumber Prices in Eastbourne

How Much Does a Plumber Charge?

What a professional plumbing price really covers, why a fixed price beats an hourly rate, why the cheapest quotation may not offer the best value, and how Exclusive Trades calculates its fixed prices.

Plumbing prices vary because the service behind them varies

The amount a plumbing company charges is not the plumber's wage. Their fee contributes towards the numerous costs required to provide their clients with a professional service.

A cheap price is not automatically a sign of poor workmanship. However, when one quotation is much lower than the others, it is sensible to ask yourself what has been reduced or excluded to allow the work to be completed at the lower cost.

Price is the easiest thing to compare and the least useful measure of value. Who is doing the work, do they possess the appropriate formal qualifications, what materials they are installing in your property and what kind of guarantee comes with their work will matter far more — today, and for years afterwards.

Why a fixed price is usually the sign of a more professional company

Not all pricing structures work the same way — and the difference affects you directly.

A fixed-price company

  • Invests in advanced training so work can be completed efficiently.
  • Profit depends on skill and accuracy, not on how long the job takes.
  • The price you're quoted is the price you pay — a genuine guarantee.

An hourly-rate company

  • Earns more the longer a job takes — there's no incentive to work quickly.
  • An estimate is only a guess, not a guarantee.
  • Costs can rise significantly once work is already underway.

The exception: for simple jobs with little skill involved — unblocking a sink or a drain, for example — an hourly-rate company is often the cheaper, more sensible choice. There's no real efficiency advantage to pay for. For anything more involved, a fixed price is usually the better sign of a professional operation.

In the UK, anyone can call themselves a plumber

There is no legal requirement to hold any qualification or prior experience before setting up a plumbing business. Anyone can put plumber on a van.

That makes it especially important to check for the right credentials before hiring — even for something as simple as fitting a new set of taps:

  • Water Regulations qualification — ensures plumbing work is carried out correctly and that your health is not placed at risk from biological agents such as Leptospirosis, Giardia and Norovirus.
  • Legionnaires Disease Risk Assessor qualification — particularly relevant for pipework alterations, to make sure changes don't create redundant sections of pipe or areas of low flow where bacteria can develop.

Neither of these are required by law, so it's down to you to ask.

Watch out for YouTube-Trained Plumbers

A growing number of handyman-style companies advertise plumbing services without genuine plumbing training behind them. These range from bathroom installations that might look fine on the day — but poor first-fix work, incorrect pipe sizing, or non-compliant installations often surface later as leaks, contaminated water supplies, or costly repairs. Incorrect radiator replacements can lead to premature (and sometimes instant) boiler failures.

The cost of providing a professional plumbing service. . .

Your Guarantee:

One of the most important things to you is probably the peace of mind that everything will work exactly as it should and that if something does go wrong within the first 12 months, it will be put right quickly and at no additional cost to you.

To offer that level of guarantee, a plumbing company has to build the cost of standing behind its work into its pricing. Part of this comes from a reasonable mark-up on the materials it supplies.

That mark-up doesn't simply increase profit. It helps cover the real costs of honouring a guarantee, such as replacing faulty parts, making return visits, handling warranty claims, and resolving unexpected issues without sending you another bill.

When we supply the materials for your installation, we're not just providing the products — we're also taking responsibility for them. That's why our pricing includes a fair mark-up, one that allows us to stand behind our work, honour our guarantee, and give you the confidence that if there's ever a problem, we'll be there to put it right.

Training and qualifications

  • Gas safety training and certification.
  • Water Regulations training.
  • Legionella prevention training.
  • Manufacturer-specific boiler diagnostic and repair courses.

Vehicle costs

  • Commercial vehicle purchase or finance.
  • Maintenance, servicing and repairs.
  • Commercial vehicle insurance.
  • Fuel and road tax.

Tools and equipment

  • Professional hand and power tools.
  • Specialist testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Annual tool calibration.
  • Tool storage/organisation systems.

Business administration

  • Website, hosting and software subscriptions.
  • Accounting. banking and card-processing fees.
  • Marketing and customer communication.
  • Public liability and tool theft insurance.

These are only some of the expenses involved in running a professional plumbing and heating company.

Compare the complete service, not just the price

Question to ask Why it matters
Is the price fixed? A clear fixed price reduces the risk of unexpected hourly charges — unless the job is a simple one, where hourly can work in your favour.
What work is included? Two quotations may describe the same job but include very different materials and methods of completing the work.
Are materials included? Ask whether parts and materials are included or charged separately.
Is the company properly qualified and insured? Remember, it isn't a legal requirement, so you have to check.

Why Exclusive Trades can offer accurate fixed pricing

Exclusive Trades focuses primarily on smaller plumbing, heating and gas servicing and repair appointments within Eastbourne.

Because we work within a defined local area and concentrate on a consistent range of services, we understand how long a typical appointment should take. This includes gas safety inspections, boiler servicing, boiler fault diagnosis and small plumbing repairs.

We know how many appointments can be completed properly each day and throughout the year. Using our previous operating costs, together with a fair wage for the plumber, we calculate the cost of each available appointment.

This business model allows us to provide straightforward fixed prices without relying on rushed appointments or unexpected hourly charges.

Our standard fixed price

£187

Fixed price for a standard Exclusive Trades appointment in Eastbourne.

Depending on the service booked and the agreed scope, this can include appointments such as a gas safety inspection, boiler service or small plumbing repair.

The exact work included will be confirmed when the appointment is arranged.

Materials are not included. Parts and materials are charged separately where required, and the cost will be explained before additional work proceeds.

Why diagnostic appointments have a separate initial fee

£97

Initial diagnostic fee for a boiler breakdown or gas leak investigation.

The cause of a boiler breakdown cannot always be identified before the appliance has been tested, and replacement parts can sometimes be expensive. The diagnostic fee covers attendance at the property and the testing required to identify the fault.

Once the problem has been diagnosed, we will explain what is required and provide a fixed price before carrying out additional work.

  • If the problem can be resolved by cleaning or adjusting something and no materials are required, the total charge for the visit and repair will be £187.
  • If a more expensive repair is required (maybe a broken boiler is beyond economical repair or the parts needed are simply no longer made), and you decide not to proceed, you will pay only the £97 diagnostic fee.
  • Any parts or materials required are charged separately.

Professional rather than budget-priced

Exclusive Trades is a professional company rather than a budget plumbing service.

Our prices are set at a level that allows us to maintain the correct training, equipment and insurance, allocate appropriate time to each appointment and communicate clearly with our customers.

We do not claim that the most expensive company is automatically the best. We simply encourage customers to choose a plumber by comparing the complete service, not the cheapest headline price.

At Exclusive Trades, upon completion of any gas work, we welcome and even recommend you nominate the installation for a random inspection by the Gas Safe Register to verify the standard of our work. Upon completion of any plumbing installation or pipework alteration, we welcome an inspection by the local water authority to confirm compliance with Water Regulations.

Because of our strict adherence to Gas, Water and Building Regulations, as well as Legionella prevention guidelines, we are nearly always beaten on price — but we are never beaten on cost!(Price is what you pay to have the work carried out. Cost is what you pay to live with it for the next decade!)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Exclusive Trades charge?

Our standard fixed-price appointment is £187. The exact work included is confirmed when the appointment is booked.

Does the price include parts and materials?

No. The £187 and £97 fees do not include parts or materials. Where materials are needed, the additional cost will be explained before the work proceeds.

Why is the boiler diagnostic fee £97?

The fee covers attendance and the testing needed to identify the cause of a boiler breakdown or investigate a gas leak. Once diagnosed, we can explain the fault and provide a fixed price for any further repair.

Will I pay £97 plus £187 for a simple boiler fault?

No. When the fault can be resolved by cleaning or adjustment without materials, the total charge for the visit and repair is £187.

What happens if I do not proceed with an expensive repair?

If we diagnose the fault and you decide not to proceed with the proposed repair, you will pay only the £97 diagnostic fee.

Why might another plumber charge less?

There can be many legitimate reasons. The important point is to compare what is included, how much time is allowed, whether materials are extra, and whether the company has suitable qualifications, equipment and insurance.

Should I always avoid hourly-rate plumbers?

No — for simple jobs like clearing a blocked sink or drain, hourly pricing is often the cheaper, more practical option. It's for more skilled or complex work that fixed pricing tends to serve you better.

What areas do you cover?

Exclusive Trades works within Eastbourne (Meads, Town Centre, Roselands, Langney, Shinewater, Hampden Park, Willingdon & Ratton). Keeping our working area local helps us provide a punctual and efficient service.
