Installing or removing a gas cooker safely isn't just a case of disconnecting/connecting the cooker hose to the gas supply, there are a number of safety tests that need to be completed at various points of the work.

1. Gas tightness test. YOU MUST BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED TO DO THIS TEST. This is a test of your existing gas installation that looks for any leaks before any work starts. (Small leaks can go unnoticed for months — you might have one right now and not know it.) Any leak found during this test has to be fixed before we can start installing the new cooker.
2. Removing a cooker. Most cookers are attached to the gas pipework by a flexible hose in to a self-sealing valve. However these valves can, and do fail leading to a small gas leak that can easily go unnoticed once a cooker has been disconnected. To eliminate the risk of these leaks, a special fitting should be installed once the hose has been removed and another tightness test YOU MUST BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED TO DO THIS TEST. is carried out to make sure the gas supply is safe.
3. Connecting a cooker. When installing a cooker the Gas Safe Plumber is required to make sure the gas supply pipe meets the current regulations and where it doesn't the gas supply may need modifying.
   Provided the gas supply meets current regulations, installing a cooker is essentially the reverse of the removal. . .  You carry out the tightness test YOU MUST BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED TO DO THIS TEST. attach a new hose to the cooker if needed, connect the hose to the gas supply, carry out another tighness test YOU MUST BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED TO DO THIS TEST. and then test the gas supply is able to provide sufficent gas for the new cooker to operate safely. 4. Ventilation. A room with a gas cooking appliance needs a minimum amount of ventilation for the burners to operate safely without creating dangerous levels of carbon monoxide — sometimes this can be as simple as a having a window or door that opens directly to the outside.   Kitchens without either of these are treated as internal kitchens with their own, stricter rules around ventilation. We will be able to advise you on the requirements for your specific appliance when we arrive at your property, but correct ventilation is vital to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.
5. Minimum clearances. Every cooker comes with a installation manual that details the minimum clearances required from the cooker to another surface to prevent heat damage/fire. If these minimum clearances are not achieved, the cooker cannot be installed. (Quite often DIY kitchen fitters fail to read this installation guide and incorrectly locate the cooker and, over time the homeowner starts to notice heat damage to nearby cupboards and worktops.)
6. Registration. The completed installation is registered with the Gas Safe Register YOU MUST BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED TO DO THIS TEST. (We always do this while we are at your property), and you will then receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate through the post from 'The Gas Safe Register' at a later date.
